Vale John Williams

The VBSA is saddened to advise the passing of John Williams, Life Member of the Australian Billiards & Snooker Council (ABSC).

John had been the Tasmanian Billiards & Snooker Association President for 19 years, and was a long-time Executive member and Delegate (Tasmania), of the ABSC. He has been a constant presence at so many events for Victoria and Tasmania, and a “terrific friend of the VBSA”.

John, who turned 90 years of age in March this year, is survived by his wife Rhona, son Rodney and daughter Vicky and three grandchildren.

Condolences are offered to John’s family and friends.

RIP John Williams.

Australian Snooker & Aust Billiards cancelled

Australian Snooker Championship & Australian Billiards Championships along with the Pacific Billiards Championship have been cancelled.

This decision has been decided by the ABSC, because of the uncertinty of the State Goverments not being able to confirm dates when all states will open again and access to clubs being allowed to have face to face play indoors.

All who have entered these tournaments and would like a refund should contact the VBSA treasurer.

Please inform the treasurer with your bank details.

Anyone wishing to use their entry payment as a credit into next years Tournaments.

Road to Recovery

Great to report that David Collins is making a great recovery from his recent illness.  David asked that his thanks be passed on to all those members who expressed their good wishes for his speedy recovery.

And on that note, Stan Gorski had a recent battle with a stroke but is now recovering well and expected to regain full use of his left arm.

Great news that these two stalwarts of Victorian and Australian billiards & snooker will be gracing the tables for many years to come.

2021 Victorian Junior Championships

The 2021 Victorian Junior Championships were held today at Yarraville.

Unfortunately numbers were down with the decision of Noah Newman (U12) not to enter this year leaving just brother and sister combination Mia and Luca Macheda from Yarrawonga as the only U12s. The decision was made not to hold the U12s due to vast difference in experience and ability between the siblings. Young Mia has been selected as the U12 Victorian representative for the State team. We also lost U16 Mia Newman to soccer. Mia is captain of her soccer team this year and we wish her all the best, but as a very talented cueist for her age we certainly hope we haven’t lost her forever. COVID also played a role in losing a few youngsters, as they had no access to tables some lost interest whilst a few others now have weekend jobs.

Congratulations to all the juniors who did compete today. We had a couple of new lads playing - Denzel Barkho who has played 8 ball but had never played snooker or billiards before and young Shan Thilakarathna who at just 12 years old has had some experience on the big tables with his coach George Spiteri. Shan had some success with two match wins one in the U18 billiards round robin and one in the U16 snooker round robin. Denzel was given the Encouragement Award for the day and we hope we have piqued his interest in both billiards and snooker.

I’d like to commend their more experienced opponents Sean and Ciaran Dempsey who both encouraged the new lads and were very understanding and happy for the referees to explain some rules to Denzel and Shan during the matches.

Both Sean and Ciaran were too strong on the day and finished on top of the round robins. Consequently, it was a family affair with the brothers playing each other for the U16 & U18 snooker titles as well as the U18 billiards title. Sean had a convincing win in the billiards, but Ciaran put up a good fight in the U18 Snooker to lead Sean at times.  In the end though Sean came out in front to win his third title of the day. Congratulations to both Sean and Ciaran who will be representing Victoria at the Nationals coming up in late June.

Victoria Masters Snooker Tournament

The 2021 Victorian Masters Grand Final Result

After a very successful event we got to the finals day on Sunday.

The semi finals ended with unexpected defeats of the remaining favourites Paul Thomerson and Henry Lau by Brendan Taylor and John Walmsley. The final was a hard fought affair with Brendan Taylor finally winning against John Walmsley in the best of 7 final by 4 frames to 3.

Congratulations and good luck to Brendan who is eligible to play in the Australian Masters. Congratulations to all competitors, many thanks to everyone that contributed to this event. We hope you played well and enjoyed the championship. Special thanks to those that made this happen so quickly and the great work arranging and officiating to their usual high standard.

In addition it was great to see George Hoy with his never ending energy and positive approach back at the VBSA as the new tournament convenor.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Victorian U21 Billiards Championship

Congratulations to Marc Fridman who took out his second State Title for the weekend. Marc won the Victorian U21 Billiards Championship today at Brunswick.

After the round robin Marc had won all three of his matches but the other contenders, Sean Dempsey, Harry Copperwaite and Pruthvi Mistry were all on equal match wins. Hence, all the necessary calculations were done and Pruthvi was the clear winner of the three, having accumulated the most points and the best points for and against percentage as well as beating the next closest to him in the Round Robin. Congratulations to Pruthvi on making it to both the billiards and snooker grand finals.

Marc made an early break in the grand final of 38, along with several scores in the teens and from then on Pruthvi was playing catch up. Pruthvi put up a good fight keeping his composure and going for the correct billiards shots but Marc’s potting skills were just too good giving him a convincing win in the 90 minute final.

Once again, thanks to the Brunswick club, thank you to Larry Eforgan for being the Grand Final referee and thanks to Tony Fridman for his help during the day.

" A Tribute to the Anzacs VC - The 2021 Charles Upham International "

The Tribute to NZ Heroes Association has been extremely busy this year organising a snooker event between Australia & New Zealand to honour our great Anzacs who fought courageously for our countries. For our freedom.

The main purpose of this snooker event is to raise awareness of mental health of our Veterans and to bring back the enjoyment of being entertained by cue sports which was a favourite past time of service men and women around the world.
Each year the tournament will rotate between Australia & New Zealand with mention in later years that England may join this elite event.

Please see the attached flier looking for your support for this very important event.  The Board of the VBSA strongly recommends this event.
