VBSA News

Key Messages for Coronavirus

The following is being passed on by the VBSA Board for the information of all VBSA members and Affiliates.  Further announcements may be made.

I am writing to provide you with the up to date Victorian Government’s messaging on COVID-19. See attachment.

• Health authorities are continuing to closely monitor the situation following the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
• Currently there are no known transmissions of the infection in the community in Victoria. All known cases in Victoria are due to travel overseas or through a direct link with a traveller.
• At this point in time our advice around major events/sporting events/creative events and other public gatherings is that they can still go ahead, and people should go about their lives as normal.
• The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) website includes the most accurate and up to date information regarding COVID-19. Please refer to this as the key resource.
• It would be timely to review and update your business continuity plans/pandemic plans. Refer to the national health sector policy document on emergency response (Australian Health Sector Emergency Response Plan For Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)) which takes precedence over any existing agency plans, where there are inconsistencies.
• Where there are mass gatherings of people, the attached advice/messages have been approved by the DHHS and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR).
• Should there be specific issues that can’t be answered from the DHHS website material, particularly in the event of COVID-19 cases being identified in Victoria, then you may wish to contact Rob Holland, Director, Office of the Secretary, DJPR on 8392 8031 or rob.holland@djpr.vic.gov.au, for assistance with coordinating a response.

As you know, the situation is dynamic and we will update you as new information comes to hand.

Regards,

Peter Betson

Reventon Hat Trick Snooker Series - Event 1

Cheltenham Club's ROD NELSON has taken out the opening event in the REVENTON HAT TRICK Snooker Series for 2020.

Rod overcame Ban Bain in his morning match and then Michael Zhang in his semi final encounter.

The final however was a much scrappier affair against Ben Gorski, who was hoping to get the Gorski name etched onto the perpetual trophy once again.  Rod took an early 2 frame to nil lead but couldn't make the most of the opportunities given to him by Ben, who then started to mount a challenge to find himself 2-1 then 3-2 down. But in the end Rod was able to get over the finish line and claim his maiden Hat Trick Title.

REVENTON SNOOKER wishes to congratulate Rod on his victory and looks forward to seeing both he, Ben and the rest of the field in late May for Event number 2.

Health Warning

Given the current concerns about the spread of Coronavirus, the VBSA Board wishes to bring to the attention of its members the following.

Handshaking is something we do in our sport every time we meet our opponents and typically at the start and end a match. One of the precautions advised by Federal and State Health Authorities is to avoid contact such as handshaking.

Therefore, and in the best interests of all, the Boards position is that handshaking is no longer recommended while this global threat looms over us.

Neil Robertson Coral World Grand Prix Champion

Dott Dashed by Five-Ton Robertson!

Neil Robertson has for the first time won the Coral World Grand Prix by beating Graeme Dott 10-8  whilst firing in 5 centuries in the final and making it his 2nd title this year.

He collected the $100,000 top prize and also took the highest break prize with a magnificent 142, breaking the highest break of the competition of 140 which he made earlier in the competition!

That makes it 3 finals in 3 weeks, 2 wins, and 18 wins of his last 19 matches, an incredible performance and stunning record!

Major Announcement - A Grade Pennant Snooker

Hi all, I wish to convey a Happy New Year to all VBSA Members and their collective families.

After many years of slowly watching participating numbers declining and the competition becoming stale, I have been charged with reinvigorating and giving some new ideas, with Your Boards blessing, to do just that.

I formed a Pennant Sub-Committee, comprising Aaron Mahoney, Marc Bullen, Paul Thomerson, Sumit Kapoor, Phil Vassallo and yours truly.
After a hash up of ideas, the outcomes are truly revolutionary and exciting and have the full support of the Board. These New Outcomes are going to, I believe, bring some real excitement to the A Grade Pennant Season, with the B Grade and C Grade to follow in the coming seasons.

So here it is,

  1. All players will be graded into Tiers; Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and so on based on current VBSA Snooker rankings.
  2. The Sub-committee will be charged with allocating players to Tiers and of course discretionary powers will be used to determine players that are able to play but not necessarily well known to the Rankings.
  3. Timed Pennant Matches to be kept at 1 hour and 20 Minutes.
  4. Team entry of $500 consisting of 4-man teams with reserves, payable on team entry.  Normal pennant fees will also apply at the end of the season.
  5. VBSA sponsoring up to $2000 towards the Overall Prize Money for the season.
  6. Finals to be a Carnival atmosphere with all Teams participating on Grand Final night for a share of “Prize Money“ to 8th Place out of a minimum of 8 A Grade sides.

A brief explanation on how a Team will be made up is;
One Tier 1 player to play in number 1 position, one Tier 2 player to play in number 2 position and the rest of the side is to consist of Tier 3 players.  If a Team cannot field a Tier 1 player, the Team can consist of two Tier 2 players and the rest with Tier 3’s.

The New Tier System List is now attached.  The Pennant Sub Committee will have Final Say with Discretionary Power to change Tiering as required.

It goes without saying that these are major and fundamental changes and we need a minimum of 8 sides to compete for a minimum of $6000 to a possible $8000 with some small Club Sponsorship to achieve this.

I encourage and look forward to your feedback.  Please send all feedback and queries to me manny.stefanou@vbsa.org.au.

With this modification to the A Grade Snooker competition, the closing date for entries for ALL grades has now been extended to Friday 31st January 2020. Team entries are now being accepted online by clicking this LINK.

Yours Truly,

Manny Stefanou

Neil Robertson European Masters Champion

Neil Robertson became the second player ever to whitewash his opponent in a two-session ranking event final as he beat Zhou Yuelong 9-0 to win the BetVictor European Masters in Dornbirn.

It’s a piece of snooker history for the Australian as it’s the first ranking final to finish 9-0. The only previous whitewash over a similar length came at the 1989 Grand Prix when Steve Davis beat Dean Reynolds 10-0.

Robertson destroyed China’s 22-year-old Zhou, who was playing in his first ranking final, with a cold-blooded display. Four frames were won in single visits, the other five demonstrated his tactical supremacy as he cruised to the £80,000 top prize. He has now won 17 ranking titles, bringing him level with Mark Selby in sixth place on the all time list.

Most ranking titles
Ronnie O’Sullivan 36
Stephen Hendry 36
John Higgins 30
Steve Davis 28
Mark Williams 22
Neil Robertson 17
Mark Selby 17
