2019 World Billiards Championship – Final

Peter Gilchrist of Singapore has won his fourth World Billiards Championship by defeating Sourav Kothari of India 1307-967 in an enthralling five-hour final of the 2019 Endeavour Life Care World Billiards Championship at the RACV Club in Melbourne Australia.

With breaks of 279 and 253 Kothari led by over 300, but a 313 by Gilchrist towards the end of the middle session saw him take a narrow lead into the final session. A further 300 break in the last session saw Gilchrist draw away to win by over 300 in a masterful display of billiards in front of a sell-out audience of over 160 and a large viewing audience on the World Billiards YouTube channel.

Congratulations to Peter, to Sourav for such a wonderful display of championship billiards during the week, to all the players, referees and officials who took part, but most especially to the RACV Club for hosting a tournament of such high standard, and to the spectators for creating such an electric and appreciative audience.

The 1870 John Roberts Trophy is the oldest World Championship trophy in existence. It predates the famous Claret Jug for the British Open Golf Championship by three years and the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy by seven years

Jon Moss today underwent the process to complete the transition from Class 3 to Class 2 in Snooker that he described as gruelling. As his examiners, Paul Cosgriff and myself are pleased to announce that Jon has negotiated the fire to emerge unharmed and has successfully achieved that step up in class.

VBSA Annual General Meeting & Special Resolution

The VBSA is the State Sporting Association (SSA) for Billiards and Snooker in Victoria. The State Government requires that all SSA's have a Quota of 40% Women on their Board. This requirement became effective on 1st July 2019.

After discussions with the State Government, we provided an undertaking to have our Rules (Constitution) amended at this year’s AGM, to come into line with their requirements.

A notice of Special Resolution was posted to the VBSA website 21 days ahead of the AGM allowing all members to view it in a public domain prior to casting their vote.   A vote was held passing the Special Resolution almost unanimously with only one voter abstaining.  The revised Rules can be viewed here

Prior to the 2019 AGM, we have targeted a number of women to join our Board adding appropriate qualifications and talent to enhance the performance of our Board.  Voters successfully installed four women to the Board.

The VBSA Board for 2019 consists of the following members:

Mr Manny Stefanou        Board Member

Assistants to the Board:
Mr Larry Eforgan              Director of Referees
Mr Mark Dunn                  Score Registrar
Mr Alec Spyrou                 Tournament Convener/Webmaster

There are a number of other willing participants:
Simon Fortune                  Pennant Fixturing

Qualifying Tournament – Expressions of Interest

As you will know, the 2019 Endeavour Lifecare World Billiards Championship is to be held at the RACV City Club in Melbourne from 8th – 12th October.

Interest in this event has been extremely strong, and the field is almost full, including 17 of the top 20 ranked players, seven past World Champions, plus a large contingent of cueists from India, Myanmar, New Zealand, Malaysia, Canada, Austria and Ireland. Most of these are also competing in the World Open. Prize money for the World Championship is $25,000 - the highest in memory - with a special cash prize of $24,000 in total for any 1,000 breaks made during the event.

World Billiards Ltd and the ABSC are now seeking expressions of interest from players wishing to participate in the Qualifying Tournament for the small number of remaining places in the field.
