Reventon Rankings Update

The West Coast Intenational Reventon Ranking Points gained has the two W.A. boys, Ben Judge and Matthew Bolton now leading the way in front if 9 Victorians and 1 Queenslander. The only significant movement, apart from Aaron Mahoney dropping from 1st to 3rd and Adrian Ridley from 3rd to 6th, is the appearance of that Queenslander in the shape of Steve Donohoe taking the place of Robby Foldvari in 12th.

Membership Applications

At the start of the 2018 S1 Season, the VBSA Board, on legal advice, determined that Membership Applications be required from all players.  This requirement was posted on the VBSA website on 25th February as COMMUNICATION, SPONSORSHIP AND APPLICATION.

Applications were requested via Team Captains & via direct e-mail request over the past 4 months.  However, some players have still not completed an application.

With the Finals commencing in 3 weeks time, the Board has determined that commencing from matches played on and after Monday 9th July, 2018, any result sheet that lists a player for whom an application has NOT been received will result in that player's matches being treated as a forfeit.  Further, any player who has not completed an application will be ineligible to play finals.

All Team Captains are urged to ensure that their players are showing as having completed an application.  And e-mail and SMS message has been sent to all captains who have players showing as unregistered.

Click on this LINK to be taken to the Membership Application Form page.

Please contact VBSA Secretary, Mark Dunn, on 0422 304 052 or by e-mail at info@vbsa.org.au for any queries.  DO NOT contact the VBSA Score Registrar.

Memo to all players

It was noticed at the recent Pacific International Snooker that some players had the habit of placing their chalk on the table rails when playing strokes. It has also been brought to our attention that this is a frequent practice in some Pennant matches. This is not an acceptable practice and is specifically targeted in the ABSC Code of Ethics.

Although it is understandable and allowed for players to place the chalk behind them on the rail for purposes of comfort when playing strokes that require the striker to stretch across the table, any other time this occurs could be mistaken as the player using the chalk as a measuring guide.

The VBSA is in compliance with the Code of Ethics and all players must adhere to its principles when playing competition.

IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships 2018

Victoria's own Marc Fridman has been selected to represent Australia at the 2018 IBSF World U18 & U21 Snooker Championships in Jinan, China from 2nd to 11th July.  Marc is the current Australian Under 18 Champion and was beaten in the penultimate round of the Australian Under 21 Championship.

Still just 16 years old, Marc has been accumulating some impressive results in both A Grade Pennant and recent Open Competitions.  He is the only junior playing in A Grade Pennant, reached the 3rd round of the Pacific International Snooker and was only narrowly beaten by the eventual winner, Aaron Mahoney, in the Reventon Classic.

The costs of attending the Worlds is not insignificant (+$6K) especially when, as a junior, he must be accompanied by an adult; in this case his Dad, Tony.  Some small amounts of funding have been procured, but the shortfall is still significant.  Any member or any business wanting to assist/sponsor Marc in this wonderful opportunity is urged to contact Tony Fridman on 0414 534 575.  The family would really appreciate your support.

Shaun Dalitz - Pacific Int. Snooker Champion

In a final where Shaun completely dominated his younger opponent Ben Foster, who until that point had swept all before him including victories over Ben Judge, James Mifsud, Alvin Chan, who had himself overcome some big names including possibly the biggest in Steve Mifsud and Raja Subramanian, the world disabled Snooker Champion and 300 break Billiards player, this is still not an inconsiderable feat for Ben who just couldn't find one more win in the final.

Shaun himself had to find ways along the path to the final to defeat the likes of World Billiards Champion Peter Gilchrist, two of Victoria's finest overseas imports in Rudy Sulaeman and Ayaz Khan and perhaps the biggest scalp of all in an epic quarter final that went for over 4 hours, against Matthew Bolton.

A very strong field of 81 players, including a very strong international contingent from England, Singapore, India and New Zealand along with just about everyone who is anyone in Australia took to the fully refurbished tables at the Reventon Academy in Yarraville on Saturday morning and entertained a very knowledgeable crowd and all the officials right royally. Lots of breaks without hitting the very top in terms of centuries, in fact only one and that by Johl Younger with his 114, but lots of 70s 80s & 90s to make up for that. The stand out performances by the young up and comers, including the two finalists as well as Alvin Chan, Ayaz Khan and some others who showed some promise in the early rounds. The one player who does deserve a mention and one who has supported just about every Victorian tournament as well as those interstate for many years is Craig Turner who not only gave freely of his time and effort to make the Academy the venue it is but also brought himself to prominence this weekend with a performance on the tables to make the very best wary. This includes Matthew Bolton who was taken to the deciding frame by Craig after losing the first two frames of the match and with chances to win the decider and advance even further.

Grand Final referee Abraham Newman, although not having the profile of some of the better known Victorian referees, is nevertheless highly experienced and was an unobtrusive yet positive and competent influence in making sure that everything went as smoothly as possible in this very enjoyable final.

The focus though was as it should be and that was on the players and the magnificent performances of Ben Foster and especially Shaun Dalitz.

2018 Pacific International Launch Government House

A wonderful afternoon as The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and VBSA Patron, launched the Pacific International Billiards & Snooker Tournament with a Victoria versus Rest of the World match in the magnificent Government House Billiard Room.  Congratulations to all who participated and those who made it happen, especially the very professional staff at Government House.  And Victoria won (thanks to a rare Peter Gilchrist "foul").
